American Birkebeiner

This past weekend we visited my parents in Northern Wisconsin. They live on a lake about a hour outside of Duluth, Minnesota where Tod and I grew up, and about 20 minutes from Hayward, Wisconsin. Hayward is famous for its Musky fishing and is also the finish line of the annual American Birkebeiner cross-country ski race, which took place over the weekend. Having gotten back into cross-country skiing this winter, we were excited to check out the festivities.

The pre-race events included a demonstration of Skijoring, a sport in which a skier is pulled by his or her dog via harness. It was really fun to watch, and I couldn't help but imagine some of the dogs in our lives performing this activity. Our little Murphy is like a bee on walks, never able to walk in a straight line, so being pulled behind him would be exciting to say the least. And then there are some of our dog friends from Rivermark in California like Fred, Marley and Missy who were so fast that the thought of being pulled behind any of them (on skis, no less) is simply frightful. Not sure I will be trying this sport any time soon!

The "Birkie" atmosphere was amazing! They actually brought in snow to cover all of Main Street, which served as the finish line. And there were tons of people there cheering on the skiers with cow bells. So fun!

Oh, and I'd be remiss if I didn't include at least one picture of Milo shortly after checking out the skijoring, rosy cheeks and all!

Welcome!

Welcome to the all-improved Dungan Family blog! Since we stopped taking pictures of Milo's every move, we figured this blog would be a better forum than the photo-heavy Zoomshare blog. Don't get us wrong--you will still see lots of pictures, but with this blog we are hoping to be able to better explain the story behind each picture. Enjoy!
